World Patient Safety Day 2024 was observed on 25 th September 2024 at Yenepoya Medical College
Hospital with the theme "Improving Diagnosis for patient safety" and slogan "Get it right, make it
safe" The event was organized by the Hospital Safety Committee and Quality Section. The Event began
at 2:00 PM with Interactive sessions. Ms. Niliesha Melita Carvallo, AHOO was the host of the event. The
first session was on the topic Reducing diagnostic errors: Strategies for effective communication by
Dr. Yadavalli Susmitha, Senior Resident, Radio diagnosis at YMCH. The second session was by Mrs.
Noothan Lasrado, DNS and Patient Safety Officer at YMCH on the topic Utilizing Nursing Assessment
skills to improve diagnostic accuracy. The sessions were followed by a Formal programme.
The Chief guest for the formal programme was Dr. M. S. Moosabba, Principal, YMC along with Dr.
Prakash R. M. Saldanha, Vice Principal, YMC; Dr. Abhay S. Nirgude, Dean, Faculty of Medicine, YMC
and Dr. Sharath B. V, Deputy Director IQAC, YU, were the Guest of Honor and Dr. Habib Rahaman A A
was the Presiding Officer, Dr. Sheetal Savur, HOD and Professor, Ophthalmology and Chairperson,
Hospital Safety Committee and Dr. Vijeta Thingalaya, Quality Officer, YMCH were present on the dias.
Dr. Sheetal Savur welcomed the gathering. Dr. M. S. Moosabba has shared his thoughts about the event
and patient safety. He highlighted that patient safety is a collective responsibility. Dr. Prakash R. M
Saldanha has also addressed the gathering. He appreciated the work done on safety programme, its
relevance and the need to implement further. Dr. Habib Rahaman emphasized on importance of reporting
incidents and stressed on ground implementation of International Patient Safety Goals in his address.
The Speakers, Judges and staff who have supported in organizing the event were felicitated. Two
competitions were conducted namely ie., Video making competition with theme Role of patient
identification in diagnosis and Appreciation award for the departments who have reported more number
of Near miss/ No harm incidents. A team from Nursing Department comprising of Mrs. Noothan
Lasrado, Mrs. Nileema Dsouza and Ms. Sumitha Margaret Dsouza have won First place in the Video
making competition. Departments of Laboratory, OPD and Emergency were given the appreciation
award.
An Awareness video by Dr. Ravi Vaswani, Professor of Internal medicine was launched in the presence
of dignitaries. The winning video of Video making competition was also presented to the gathering. Dr.
Vijeta Thingalaya delivered the Vote of Thanks.
